The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Harry M. McCabe (MCSN: 0-22821), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader attached to the Support Group, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the seizure of Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 6 March 1945. Painfully wounded by the slashing cross-fire of enemy artillery and mortars while advancing with his platoon in the center of the company front, First Lieutenant McCabe valiantly continued to direct his men after submitting to first-aid treatment. Although severely wounded a second time as he attempted to evacuate some of his platoon casualties, he steadfastly refused to be evacuated himself, persisting in his heroic efforts until mortally struck down by Japanese Machine-gun fire. Stout-hearted and indomitable in the face of savage opposition, First Lieutenant McCabe served as an inspiration to the officers and men of his company and his aggressive leadership, tenacious determination and resolute fortitude throughout the bitter conflict upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
