The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Kenneth James Lowe (MCSN: 302546), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Platoon Guide and Acting Platoon Sergeant, serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action on enemy Japanese held Iwo Jima, 10 March 1945. Assuming the duties of the platoon hospital corpsman when he became a casualty during an assault on hostile emplacements, Sergeant Lowe administered first aid to the corpsman and continued to lead the attack as well as care for the wounded under his command. With his platoon pinned down by murderous machine-gun and mortar barrages, he proceeded under the intense cross-fire to a wounded Marine lying forward of the front lines, rendered medical assistance and carried the helpless man to a place of safety. Although wounded while rescuing his comrades, he led an aggressive attack against the enemy and later rushed into a machine-gun fire lane to help three more seriously wounded men. Refusing medical attention for himself when he sustained a second wound, Sergeant Lowe continued to care for the others, struggling until he died saving the lives of his fallen comrades. His extreme courage, heroic concern for the welfare of others and self-sacrificing devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Lowe and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
