The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Corporal Eugene Marvin Kohlman (MCSN: 290300), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action at Fort Mills, Philippine Islands, April 9, 1942, while serving with Headquarters Company, Fourth Marines, Fort Mills, P.I. When an enemy bomb caved in a tunnel sheltering a gun grew of the 91st Coast Artillery (PS), trapping several men therein, Corporal Kohlman, without regard for his personal safety voluntarily left a place of shelter and proceeded a distance of two hundred yards over open ground to the scene of the cave-in and aided in digging out the trapped men. During all of this time, enemy planes were overhead, and dropped bombs nearby during the rescue work.
