The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Palmer L. Klahre (MCSN: 911744), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Bazooka Man, serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 26 February 1945. With his company pinned down and suffering heavy casualties immediately after landing on the fire-swept beachhead on D-Day, Corporal Klahre fearlessly braved the shattering barrage in a valiant effort to wipe out a Japanese pillbox on his left front. Charging forward without any protecting fire, he maneuvered through the blistering shellfire to an advantageous position for launching his daring lone attack and, firing his rockets through the embrasure with deadly accuracy, succeeded in destroying the 47-mm. gun emplacement before he was killed by the enemy. By his forceful initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and courageous conduct in the face of tremendous odds, Corporal Klahre contributed materially to the sustained forward advance of his company, and his self-sacrificing devotion to duty throughout the fierce action reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
