The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Arthur R. Kintzele, Jr. (MCSN: 559230), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifleman, serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 21 February 1945. Courageously volunteering to lead three friendly tanks forward across five hundred yards of open and level terrain amidst heavy machine gun and mortar fire in order to aid the attack, Private First Class Kintzele boldly walked upright in front of the lead tank, directing with the necessary arm and hand signals and examining the route for mines and artillery duds. Although mortally wounded when approximately one hundred yards from his goal, Private First Class Kintzele, by his personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts, enabled the tanks to reach their objective and support the assault. His heroic conduct and inspiring leadership reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
