The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Kenneth L. Keller (MCSN: 850443), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action on enemy Japanese-held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 26 February 1945. During an assault on a heavily fortified enemy position, Corporal Keller directed the fire of his squad while only fifteen yards from the heart of the stronghold and, throwing hand grenades and firing his rifle, moved from position to position in order to observe hostile fortified areas. Repeatedly exposing himself to intense rifle, grenade and mortar barrages for more than three hours, he attacked and destroyed three emplacements and directed his squad in eliminating other positions and killing many of the Japanese. Later, he fought on Airfield Number Two, pressing home the attack against the fanatic enemy until he fell, mortally wounded by hostile small-arms fire. His fearless leadership, daring initiative and dauntless courage were in keeping throughout with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
