The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Assistant Cook Amos L. Keemer (MCSN: 514419), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Demolition Man in a Platoon of Company B, Fourth Engineer Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 6 March 1945. When the progress of a friendly adjacent unit was halted by fire from an enemy emplacement, Assistant Cook Keemer voluntarily moved forward beyond the front lines in the face of heavy hostile fire sweeping the area, to place a demolition charge against the fortification. Pressing steadily ahead through the hail of fire, he succeeded in setting the charge which destroyed the Japanese position and was returning to his own lines when killed by an enemy sniper. Assistant Cook Keemer’s cool initiative and courageous action resulted in the elimination of a vital hostile strong point, thereby permitting our forces to continue the attack. His conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
