The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Platoon Sergeant J. T. Jenkins (MCSN: 258017), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment, at Quinauan Point, Bataan, Philippine Islands, 8 February 1942. During an attack by two armored boats in conjunction with ground forces on a strongly held enemy position, Sergeant Jenkins was charged with operation of the 37-mm. bow gun in one of the boats. In the face of heavy hostile fire from the beach and repeated dive bombing attacks on his craft, and despite firing difficulties incident to a heavy swell, this gallant Marine maintained effective fire on shore and aerial targets. His disregard for personal safety and his effective devotion to duty displayed during both the shore attack and ensuing hostile dive bombing contributed in large measure to the successful accomplishment of the mission.
