The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph J. Jablonski (MCSN: 392994), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 22 February 1945. Although three previous attempts to destroy two enemy had resulted in the death of three men and the wounding of six, Sergeant Jablonski braved heavy enemy fire to advance to a point where he could place a satchel charge of explosives and destroy one of the strong points. Proceeding alone through continuous small-arms fire to the second blockhouse, he destroyed it in the same manner, thereby enabling his company to advance. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
