The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harrydale Hyde (MCSN: 510093), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a platoon of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 26 February 1945. Quick to act when intense machine gun and rifle fire from a Japanese Machine gun position held up the advance of his platoon, Private First Class Hyde voluntarily attacked and destroyed the hostile emplacement, pressed forward on his own initiative to a second enemy stronghold located in an observation tower and boldly climbed the twelve-foot structure. Although wounded by a hostile sniper as he prepared to drop a hand grenade into the aperture, Private First Class Hyde, by his resolute courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty had rendered valiant service and his efforts throughout reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
