The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Roy E. Hjelm (MCSN: 0-13962), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Mortar Section Leader, attached to Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 19 and 20 February 1945. Defying the enemy’s continuous and intense artillery, mortar and automatic rifle barrages, First Lieutenant Hjelm held an exposed position for two days, refusing to allow other members of his section to risk their lives at this vulnerable post, maintained a constant, accurate observation of their mortar fire and succeeded in locating the hostile battery. He was killed by shrapnel from a bursting shell while directing the fire of his mortars into the Japanese position. His fortitude, unwavering devotion to duty and courage throughout reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Hjelm and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
