The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Calvin C. Heinbach (MCSN: 872328), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of a Demolition Squad of Company C, Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands on 5 March 1945. When the advance of the infantry was held up by heavy casualties inflicted by an enemy automatic weapon delivering enfilade fire from a well-concealed cave, Corporal Heinbach through armed only with a carbine, unhesitatingly made his way forward through withering small arms and mortar barrages, located the position, charged and killed the gunner and captured the weapon, thereby contributing materially to the advance of the infantry in that sector. His courageous initiative and valiant fighting spirit reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Heinbach and the United States Naval Service.
