The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Nicholas J. Haverland (MCSN: 937620), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters and Service Company, Twenty-Eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands from 13 to 16 March 1945. When his platoon was attacked by a large number of Japanese, Private Haverland intercepted a grenade with his pack and then standing clear of his foxhole hurled grenades at the attacking forces, inflicting casualties and causing them to retreat. When the position was again jeopardized later that night, he exposed himself to heavy hostile fire to throw grenades which contributed greatly in routing the enemy. He continued to serve with distinction in the front lines until he was killed by sniper fire on 16 March. His courageous conduct and decisive actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
