The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Floyd V. Hallmark (MCSN: 358426), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gunner in a platoon of Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-eight Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 1 March 1945. With his platoon’s advance disrupted by intense machine gun fire emanating from an enemy held cave, Corporal Hallmark maneuvered his fire team into a favorable position and spraying the hostile position with bullets, succeeded in silencing the weapon. Realizing that other Japanese in the cave might resume firing he set out to capture the gun and proceeding in bold defiance of the enemy hidden in neighboring emplacements had almost reached the objective entrenchment when he fell, mortally wounded by Japanese sniper fire. His daring initiative, heroic conduct and unswerving devotion to duty in the face of grave danger were inspiring to those with whom he served and reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Hallmark and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
