The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Daniel A. Goldblatt (MCSN: 522142), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Company Runner, serving Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 13 March 1945. Courageously disregarding his own personal Shrapnel wounds, Private Goldblatt directed the removal of wounded Marines from an advanced area swept by terrific Japanese mortar and sniper fire and, leaving the litter team safe in the defilade area, again crawled forward to the front. Quickly locating additional casualties, he was returning to the litter tem when struck a second time by hostile sniper fire. Fully aware of his serious condition, he managed to work his way back to his unit where, fighting unconsciousness and ignoring his mortal wounds, he explained to his men the safest route of advance and how best to evacuate the wounded. By his fortitude, outstanding courage and valiant leadership throughout this critical period, Private Goldblatt contributed materially to the saving of many lives and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
