    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Donald J. Garrett (MCSN: 279265), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment, at Fort Mills, Philippine Islands, 15 February 1942. During the course of an enemy artillery bombardment on Fort Mills, Private First Class Garrett, without regard for his personal safety, voluntarily left a place of shelter, and assisted in the removal of wounded Navy personnel from the South Dock, over ground exposed to enemy fire.
