The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Marvin D. Fross (MCSN: 307021), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 22 February 1945. Observing a wounded Marine lying helpless in front of the company lines, Sergeant Fross courageously braved a hail of hostile mortar, machine-gun and rifle fire emanating from a Japanese pillbox to render first aid to his comrade. Sustaining fatal wounds from the intense fire, he dauntlessly persevered in his mission, struggling back to friendly lines with the wounded man. By his heroic actions, unselfish concern for another and loyal devotion to duty, Sergeant Fross served as an inspiration to the men of his company and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
