The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Rene S. Foubert (MCSN: 447245), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-Eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 5 March 1945. Courageously leading his squad in a furious assault against a vastly outnumbering, deeply entrenched enemy heavily fortified with heavy mortars, machine guns and various small arms, Corporal Foubert placed himself at the head of his men and, pushing forward with persistent skill and iron determination, succeeded in driving the Japanese forces from their positions. With his own position subsequently made untenable under continuing automatic weapons fire, he promptly effected a reorganization of his depleted squad and, in a valiant attempt to hold the newly-won ground, armed himself with an automatic rifle and engaged the enemy in a bitter fire fight to reduce the accuracy of the hostile return fire and enable his squad to consolidate the line. Struck by a bullet splash on a nearby rock, Corporal Foubert dauntlessly continued pouring his deadly fire on the enemy until he fell, mortally wounded. By his daring initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty in the face of tremendous odds, Corporal Foubert served as an inspiration to his comrades and contributed materially to the success of the bitterly fought Iwo campaign. His valiant conduct and unrelenting devotion to duty throughout reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
