The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Daniel V. Emanuel, Jr. (MCSN: 368794), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Weapons Company, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 9 March 1945. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrible fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Emmanuel rendered valiant service during operations on this strategically important island, repeatedly volunteering for front line duty at night and for work as a litter bearer during the day, in addition to his regular duties as a machine gunner. On 9 March, when a withering burst of hostile machine-gun and mortar fire severely wounded his fellow litter bearer while attempting to remove a casualty, Private First Class Emmanuel fearlessly rushed forward despite the enemy’s savage barrage and successfully evacuated both of the wounded men to safety. Later the same day, while participating in a bitter engagement with the fanatical Japanese, he was mortally wounded by hostile fire. By his daring initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and great personal valor in voluntarily risking his life for others, Private First Class Emmanuel saved the lives of two of his comrades who otherwise might have perished. His inspiring conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
