The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Kenneth Dollaway (MCSN: 949548), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifleman, serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against the Japanese during the invasion of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 10 to 14 March 1945. When the leader and non-commissioned officers of his platoon were lost, Private Dollaway resolutely assumed command and defied deadly hostile mortar barrages to rally and reorganize his scattered and confused comrades. Fearlessly commanding his platoon in the relentless struggle, he led his men in advancing against the fanatic enemy’s savage resistance, continuing his gallant fighting for five days before he fell, mortally wounded. His extraordinary leadership, decisive action and heroic devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private Dollaway and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
