The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Andrew N. DiFilippo (MCSN: 399499), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Battalion Runner serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands Area, from 19 February to 14 March 1945. Fearlessly disregarding all personal safety, on 28 February, and again on 10 March, Corporal Di Filippo advanced under a furious barrage to render first aid to a Marine casualty, subsequently carrying the wounded man to safety on each instance. Consistently alert in his performance of duty, he exercised his own initiative when a furious bombardment from well-concealed Japanese positions pinned down an attacking company and caused serious casualties on 14 March and, running to a tank near-by to designate the position to the gunner, coolly remained at his post under a direct concentration of enemy fire and directed the tank’s fire on new targets until he fell mortally wounded. By his exemplary fortitude and self-sacrificing devotion to the completion of important and dangerous missions, he upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
