The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Ewing A. DeMange (MCSN: 0-41811), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of a Rifle Company attached to the Third Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 7 March 1945. Assigned command of a rifle platoon whose leader had became a casualty, Second Lieutenant DeMange immediately reorganized the platoon and, despite heavy enemy mortar and small-arms fire, personally led his group forward of the remainder of the company. Observing members of a litter party advancing in the direct path of hostile fire, he unhesitatingly stepped forward to warn them of their danger, losing his own life in the performance of this gallant deed. By his heroic conduct and self-sacrificing efforts in behalf of others, Second Lieutenant DeMange upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
