The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Charles W. Davis, Jr. (MCSN: 309369), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader in a platoon of Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 8 March 1945. Participating in a vigorous assault against a fanatically defended Japanese entrenchment, Corporal Davis boldly led his men up the face of a ridge through intense rifle grenade and machine-gun fire. With his platoon pinned down by the deadly barrages, he proceeded to an open, unprotected position, delivering a steady stream of bullets into the enemy and designating targets for supporting units until he fell, mortally wounded. His daring initiative, indomitable spirit and unwavering devotion to duty at grave personal risk were important factors in the destruction of many Japanese and in the success of his platoon’s mission, and his heroic conduct throughout inspired the men with whom he served and reflected the highest credit upon Corporal Davis and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
