The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Carlyle J. Council (MCSN: 497382), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands the night of 23 February 1945. Stationed with another Marine in an isolated outpost when the Japanese launched a vicious attack on his sector, Corporal Council refused to retreat before the onrushing enemy, remaining in his vulnerable position and engaging the Japanese in a bitter struggle to prevent a penetration of our lines. Although his comrade was struck down during the savage action, Corporal Council boldly fought on alone against the hostile force killing five of the Japanese in rapid succession and disrupting the attempted breakthrough. By his daring initiative, grim determination and dauntless courage he succeeded in repulsing a large group of enemy attackers and undoubtedly saved the lives of his men who might have perished if the Japanese had overrun our lines. Corporal Council’s heroic conduct and wavering devotion to duty during combat against a ferocious and desperate enemy were inspiring to those with whom he served and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
