The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Carl A. Clausser (MCSN: 829331), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Machine Gunner serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, in action against the enemy on Japanese held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 28 February 1945. When his platoon which had advanced and captured a Japanese fortified stronghold was ordered to reorganize and move into a more advantageous position for the night and it was discovered that three wounded Marines were left behind. Private Clausser and six other men volunteered to return to the hostile lines to search for and rescue their wounded comrades. Advancing with the others over two hundred yards into enemy territory in the face of heavy mortar and machine gun fire, he helped to neutralize an enemy pillbox and to remove the wounded men to safety. His courageous conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon Private Clausser and the United States Naval Service.
