The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant Paul J. Carpenter (MCSN: 253654), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader, serving with Company B, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. When his platoon was ordered to advance through an area swept by continuous enemy cross-fire, First Sergeant Carpenter boldly led his men forward and, testing likely fire lanes before allowing his men to pass through them, skillfully maneuvered his force toward the hostile position, silencing three machine gun nests as he advanced on the Japanese strong point. First Sergeant Carpenter continued his aggressive tactics until instantly killed during the final assault on the position. By his dauntless leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and perseverance in the face of tremendous opposition, First Sergeant Carpenter rendered valiant service, and his conduct throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
