The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Owen R. Beede (MCSN: 0-39141), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Machine Gun Platoon attached to Company B, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 27 February to 7 March 1945. When a platoon of friendly tanks became confused and poured machine gun and 75-mm. high explosive ammunition into the rifle platoons of his own company during an engagement with the enemy on 27 February, Second Lieutenant Beede, although forced to cross a one hundred yard open expanse swept by devastating hostile machine gun, mortar and anti-tank fire, voluntarily risked his life in a desperate attempt to inform the leader. Reaching the command tank, he promptly seized the phone and, remaining erect and exposed despite the terrific shellfire, calmly walked beside the vehicle and transmitted his orders until he was able to adjust the line of fire. Unceasing in his efforts to destroy the enemy, Second Lieutenant Beede continued his daring tactics in the sustained drive across the island, carrying on valiantly until he was fatally struck down when the Japanese launched a terrific mortar barrage against his position during a fierce encounter on 7 March. By his daring initiative, cool courage and aggressive determination in the face of tremendous odds, Second Lieutenant Beede contributed to the saving of many lives and to the success of the bitterly fought Iwo campaign. His selfless devotion to duty throughout reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
