The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Stanley F. Bartkiewicz (MCSN: 511275), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-Eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 19 February 1945. Sergeant Bartkiewicz, voluntarily and without orders, repeatedly loaded and drove a cargo carrier through heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire in order to supply his battalion. During the critical period on this date, his was the only supply vehicle to cross the island. His great courage and splendid initiative contributed materially to the success of his battalion, His valiant devotion to duty and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
