The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Philip (Phillip) Guy Baldwin (MCSN: 271180), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Rifle Platoon of Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 11 March 1945. Leading his platoon in an attack against a strategic Japanese position, Corporal Baldwin and his unit were impeded by heavy automatic fire from hostile emplacements to the front. Undaunted by grave hazards, he immediately penetrated an exposed area and voluntarily assuming command of the supporting platoon of tanks, braved terrific enemy fire to deploy the tanks into positions from which they quickly destroyed the enemy strongholds and enabled his company to continue the advance. His cool courage, fearless initiative and unwavering devotion to duty throughout this hazardous engagement reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Baldwin and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
