The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Myron C. Harrington, Jr. (MCSN: 0-81869), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 15 February 1968 during Operation HUE CITY, Captain Harrington’s company was assaulting the heavily defended Arch Tower along the fortified eastern wall of the Citadel when it came under intense enemy fire, halting the Marines’ advance. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Captain Harrington completely disregarded his own safety as he moved forward of his leading elements and crossed the fire-swept street to an exposed vantage point. Requesting tank support and 3.5 inch rocket launchers, he directed their fire against the tower, skillfully maneuvered one platoon to the structure and directed another platoon to attack an adjacent building. After the tower was seized, Captain Harrington immediately established defensive positions, redistributed ammunition and directed the evacuation of his casualties. Early the following morning, the North Vietnamese counterattacked with hand grenades, rocket and mortar fire, forcing the Marines to withdraw. Displaying exceptional tactical leadership and courage, Captain Harrington quickly reorganized his company, directed effective supporting fires against the enemy and maneuvered his men in an aggressive counterattack which routed the hostile force. By his dynamic leadership, sound tactical judgment and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Captain Harrington contributed significantly to the defeat of the enemy and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
