The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Technical Sergeant Donald N. Bush (MCSN: 432619), United States Marine Corps, for heroism in rescuing a pilot from the burning wreckage of an aircraft in Sinchon, Korea, on 19 September 1951. When an observation type aircraft crashed into the Soyang-gang River and burst into flames, Technical Sergeant Bush immediately ran into the river to assist in the rescue of the pilot and observer. The right wing of the aircraft had exploded and buckled over the only door, and the aircraft was in flames. Heedless of the danger, Technical Sergeant Bush grasped the burning wing, tearing it loose enough to allow him to get to the pilot. Reaching the pilot, who was face down in the water, he pulled him upright to prevent drowning and fought off the flames with his hands. When assistance arrived, Technical Sergeant Bush continued his efforts until the two seriously injured men were removed to safety. His courage, in the face of great danger to himself, was an inspiration to all who observed him, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
