The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Platoon Sergeant William L. Brown (MCSN: 262653), United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving with a Marine Military Police Battalion on Guam, Mariana Islands, on 1 August 1945. As a member of a motor patrol answering a call for assistance, Platoon Sergeant Brown, disregarding his own personal safety, swam to the rescue of two servicemen who were struggling in a heavy surf as a result of their boat having capsized. His presence of mind, quick action and physical ability to combat heavy seas, brought about b storms from off-shore, resulted in the saving of a life which otherwise would have been lost. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
