The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Sergeant Fred I. Brevik (MCSN: 360164), United States Marine Corps, for heroism while engaged in leading a group of men across the Faughan River during a combat problem. Sergeant Brevik, after having safely made the crossing himself, noticed that several of his men were having difficulty in crossing the rifer. With utter disregard for his own safety, he assisted one man to climb up the bank of the river and then jumped back into the river and swam to the aid of two other men. His heroic were without avail, however, as during the ensuing struggle the lives of all three men were lost.
