The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Charles N. Bodine (MCSN: 421288), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroism in preventing the destruction of Dump Number One on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 16 March 1945. Corporal Bodine on Military Police duty was directing traffic at his post, twenty yards from Dump Number One, when his attention was called to smoke rising from a gasoline and ammunition dump in the vicinity of his post. Upon an investigation he observed a grenade lying in a pile of high explosives and detonation caps, with large quantities of gasoline and ammunition only a few feet away. Without hesitation, and with complete disregard of his own personal safety, he picked up the burning grenade and threw it into the road where it exploded and as it exploded, threw particles of the burning phosphorous back into the dump. Corporal Bodine immediately ran to the burning particles and extinguished them by the use of sand and dirt which he scooped up with his bare hands. His heroic conduct performed in the face of great danger to himself was outstanding and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
