The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal David T. Birge (MCSN: 303523), United States Marine Corps, for heroism in effecting the rescue of two enlisted men washed overboard from the United States Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS (CA-35) on 4 May 1943, off San Francisco, California. On seeing several members of the crew afloat but in weakened condition in a rough sea, he, with complete disregard for his own personal safety and at great personal risk, jumped overboard and assisted two men to the side of the ship, where they were assisted on board. His courage, alertness and devotion to his shipmates were an inspiration to all with whom he served and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
