The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Robert Hal Bingham (MCSN: 0-19369), United States Marine Corps, for heroic and meritorious conduct during an evacuation of a troop laden Landing Ship Tank after several severe explosions on 21 May 1944, which resulted in complete evacuation of all hands. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Second Lieutenant Bingham continued to expose himself to save men who were wounded by shrapnel and falling debris. While working with the wounded, Second Lieutenant Bingham was hit by shrapnel, but refused to leave the area until his men were safely evacuated. His inspiring action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
