The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to First Lieutenant Lawrence H. Bemoll (MCSN: 0-36359), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroism while serving with a Marine Service Battalion at an advanced base on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 20 July 1945. When an amphibian tractor exploded and caught fire, First Lieutenant Bemoll promptly, voluntarily and with complete disregard for his own safety, made his way to the burning vehicle and despite the peril of burning gasoline, removed a member of his crew from the driver’s compartment. His fearless and prompt action saved the life of a member of his crew, and his valiant conduct under perilous conditions was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
