The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Edward “C” Zimmerman, Jr. (MCSN: 2097504), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 25 June 1966. During Operation Jay in Chinh An Village, Thus Thien Province, his company came in contact with a strong well-entrenched Viet Cong force Corporal Zimmerman was with the leading elements of the point which became subjected to a heavy concentration of fire from the enemy hiding in the village. By remaining in the open and delivering very effective fire which caused numerous enemy casualties, he enabled the members of his fire team and the adjacent fire teams to maneuver to positions where they could better engage the enemy. While moving to a covered position, he observed a wounded Marine in an exposed position twenty-five meters away. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and despite the intensely accurate enemy small-arms and automatic weapons fire, he attempted to reach the wounded Marine but was mortally wounded. Corporal Zimmerman’s selfless act of devotion to his fellow comrade at the sacrifice of his own life was an inspiration to all who observed him. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
