The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Hillous York (MCSN: 2294390), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 May 1967, Company C launched an assault against a North Vietnamese Army battalion which was firmly entrenched on Hill 110 in the Suoi Cho Dun Valley. When his platoon commander was killed during the assault, Sergeant York immediately assumed command of the platoon and, maintain effective control, directed a heavy volume of return fire against the enemy position, while personally killing two of the enemy and wounding another. Disregarding his own safety, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense enemy small arms and mortar fire to move the wounded Marines to positions of relative safety. After consolidating his platoon’s position, he organized a rescue detail to evacuate casualties throughout the company area and, repeatedly exposing himself to hostile fire, provided covering fire for the operation. His heroic and timely actions at great personal risk were an inspiration to all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of many Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant York upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
