The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Michael F. Wojcik (MCSN: 2041162), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Forward Supply Representative with the III Marine Amphibious Force on 21 and 22 May 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. During this period, Sergeant Wojcik skillfully coordinated and supervised all local supply matters in the establishment and defense of the Forward Command Post at DaNang. When attack on the Command Post by dissident Vietnamese forces appeared imminent on 21 May, two rifle companies were assigned to augment provisional security units deployed in perimeter defense. Throughout the day, Sergeant Wojcik repeatedly exposed himself to sporadic small arms fire to deliver ammunition and supplies to the units on the perimeter. Using a forklift as a transport vehicle, he aggressively and unhesitatingly made his way, time and again, through the deadly fire to deliver the vital supplies. Although subjected to strafing and high explosive and automatic fire from Vietnamese aircraft, he interrupted his deliveries only once, to insure that medical aid was being administered to eight wounded Marines. Fearlessly and with complete disregard for his own safety, he continued operating his forklift to accomplish his objectives. Throughout the hours of darkness, he continued to coordinate the myriad re-supply details such as water delivery and replenishment of rations. On 22 May while still at the Command Post, he again manned a forklift to move additional materials to various points on the defensive perimeter, and made numerous trips outside the compound into exposed areas to secure rations for the camp. When a mortar round fell near him, Sergeant Wojcik was grievously wounded, instantly losing one leg and sustaining serious damage to the other, which later necessitated amputation. Despite these extremely painful wounds, he refused evacuation until he had pointed out the locations of all materials and had provided the status of all supplies to other responsible Marines. His utter disregard of excruciating pain to give timely and resourceful instructions to his successors provided vital continuity in the re-supply of the units on the defensive perimeter and materially contributed to the successful defense of the Command Post. By his completely selfless devotion to duty, heroism, and exceptional initiative and resourcefulness, Sergeant Wojcik inspired all with whom he served and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
