The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Herbert T. Winston (MCSN: 0-80190), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity on 5 June 1969 while serving as Battalion Advisor, 4th Battalion, 6th Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. The battalion was in contact with two North Vietnamese Army companies in a heavily fortified area northwest of Quang Ngai City. Disregarding his own safety, Major Winston moved to an exposed position to control air strikes. Later in the afternoon when a ground assault began to falter he moved forward to join the lead assault elements and was seriously wounded by mortar fragments. Although unable to walk, he dragged himself several meters to assist a seriously wounded Vietnamese soldier. When a Vietnamese medic arrived he refused help, directing the medic to assist four wounded Vietnamese soldiers. Major Winston made his way to the bomb crater where his team was located and instructed his assistant to move to the rear and establish a landing zone for the evacuation of all wounded personnel. Refusing evacuation himself, he moved through intense enemy fire to a forward vantage point and directed artillery and fixed wing gun ships throughout the night. Only after the enemy position had been seized the following morning and replacement advisors had arrive, did he allow himself to be evacuated. His actions directly contributed to the rout of the North Vietnamese Army force which resulted in 59 enemy killed and numerous weapons and items of equipment captured. Major Winston’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
