The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lyndol Raye Wilson (MCSN: 2344178), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Anti-tank Assaultman with Company H, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 3 February 1968, Company H was assaulting a well entrenched and numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force near the Hue University. As the Marines maneuvered forward, they were temporarily halted by the heavy volume of small arms, automatic weapons and B-40 rocket fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Wilson unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense fire and fearlessly ran across a fire-swept street to one of the University buildings. Climbing to the roof, he exposed himself to the enemy fire and began delivering accurate 3.5 inch rocket and light antitank assault weapons fire upon the enemy positions, which reduced the effectiveness of the enemy fire and enabled his unit to maneuver toward its objective. The following day, his platoon was attacking an enemy force that was occupying a large building complex, when the lead squad suddenly came under small arms and automatic weapons fire. During the initial moments of the assault, the squad leader was seriously wounded and fell in a dangerously exposed area. Undaunted by the intense hostile fire, Private First Class Wilson immediately maneuvered to the side of the injured man, picked him up and carried him to a covered position. Returning to the hazardous area, he boldly assumed command of the squad and, shouting words of encouragement to his men, led a determined assault which enabled the Marines to seize their objective. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Private First Class Wilson was an inspiration to all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
