The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Johnny B. Williams (MCSN: 2427993), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 29 August 1968, Company D was participating in a search and destroy operation in the vicinity of Phu Bac (2) in Quang Nam Province when the lead elements came under intense automatic weapons fire and were pinned down, sustaining several casualties. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Williams unhesitatingly moved forward from a relatively safe position and advanced across the fire-swept terrain to assist the wounded Marines. Coming under a heavy volume of fire from a nearby trench line, he boldly assaulted the hostile position and, firing his rifle and throwing hand grenades, single-handedly destroyed the fortification and killed three North Vietnamese soldiers. Then, quickly maneuvering to the casualties, he carried one seriously wounded Marine into a bomb crater. Fearlessly returning to the hazardous area, Private First Class Williams continued to expose himself to hostile fire while delivering effective suppressive fire which enabled the remaining Marines to maneuver to more advantageous positions. His heroic actions and bold initiative inspired all who observed him and undoubtedly saved the lives of several Marines. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty at a great personal risk, Private First Class Williams upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
