The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Clifford Dan Williams (MCSN: 2248665), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant for First Platoon, Company K, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 27 to 28 March 1968. Under heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Williams, although wounded by an earlier mortar round, ran instantly to assist the Corpsman with the injured platoon commander who was bleeding profusely from severe neck and body wounds. They worked furiously to control the lieutenant’s bleeding as a second long barrage of enemy mortar rounds began to fall. Sergeant Williams, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, placed his flak jacket over his platoon command and communicated the urgency through the company commander for an emergency evacuation. Although wounded and gravely concerned for his platoon commander, Sergeant Williams courageously assumed complete command of First Platoon, directing suppressive fire against the enemy. Though the evacuation helicopter arrived during the ongoing mortar assault, he assisted in carrying the wounded Marine across open terrain and hoisted him into the hovering helicopter. Sergeant Williams then aggressively led First Platoon throughout the remainder of the night and the following day until a new platoon commander arrived. His determination and daring, despite continuous enemy fire and personal wounds, undoubtedly saved the life of his platoon commander and ensured the success of First Platoon’s mission. By his initiative, courageous actions, and complete dedication to duty, Sergeant Williams reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
