The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jerry Robert Wigg (MCSN: 1694359), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Dog Handler with the Third Military Police Battalion, Force Logistic Command in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 December 1968, Corporal Wigg was attached to Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division during a search and destroy operation near An Hoa in Quang Nam Province when the Marines came upon a heavily booby trapped area. Unhesitatingly assuming the point position, he skillfully led his companions through the hazardous area, until he was seriously wounded by the detonation of a hidden enemy explosive device. Ignoring his painful wounds, Corporal Wigg steadfastly refused to allow a corpsman or any of his comrades to approach his position until the entire section had been cleared of all booby traps. His sincere concern for the welfare of his fellow Marines inspired all who observed him and saved his companions from serious injury or possible death. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Wigg upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
