The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Tracy L. Whoolery (MCSN: 1920881), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Company Gunnery Sergeant of Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on the morning of 1 November 1967. While on a combat operation southwest of Quang Tri City, Staff Sergeant Whoolery’s company was moving through dense undergrowth in an area known to be heavily mined. As the lead element proceeded, two of the mines exploded and wounded seven Marines. Although realizing the seriousness of the situation, he raced into the hazardous area without hesitation to assist in the aid of his injured comrades. Recognizing at once that a medical evacuation by helicopter was needed to save the lives of the wounded and despite the warnings of his fellow Marines, he moved across the mine infested terrain to locate a suitable landing site. Aware of the danger involved, and with complete disregard for his own safety, he bravely moved 75 yards up a trail and located an acceptable landing place. After directing that the wounded he brought to the evacuation area, he diligently began clearing the site of mines, when an enemy explosive device detonated, mortally wounding him. By his bold courage, stalwart determination and selfless devotion to duty, Staff Sergeant Whoolery upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
