The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Dennis Weldon Wellmann (MCSN: 2162886), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radio Operator with Company E, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, near Cam Lo, Republic of Vietnam on 23 August 1966. When elements of his company were trapped by a heavy barrage of enemy grenades, automatic weapons, and anti-aircraft machine gun fire, Lance Corporal Wellmann fearlessly exposed himself to the deadly fusillade to accurately report and help coordinate company elements for his Commanding Officer who had been wounded. Sustaining severe fragmentation wounds he courageously remained in an exposed position to relay information and spot enemy positions for supporting 60-mm. mortar fire. As the enemy fire increased in volume and accuracy, he continued to set an example of calmness and courage by his selfless heroic stand, resolutely remaining at his post until he succumbed to his grievous wounds. As a result of his expeditious concise reporting and noteworthy efforts of assisting in coordinating the widely dispersed units, many lives were saved. His indomitable fighting spirit, marked fortitude and unwavering devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
