The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roy Earle Waldrop (MCSN: 2382787), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 May 1968, during Operation ALLEN BROOK, when one of the platoons of Company G was ambushed by an estimated reinforced platoon of North Vietnamese Army Regulars, Private First Class Waldrop accompanied the remainder of the company to assist the beleaguered unit. As his platoon approached the ambush site, the unit came under intense saw and small arms fire and was temporarily pinned down by an enemy force entrenched in fortified positions. Alertly detecting a concealed enemy machine gun position, Private First Class Waldrop fired into the emplacement and killed the enemy gunner. When another North Vietnamese soldier began firing the weapon, Private First Class Waldrop fearlessly assaulted the bunker single-handed. Although severely wounded in the arm, he reached the fortification and killed the occupants with a hand grenade. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in repulsing the North Vietnamese Army force. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Waldrop upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
