The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel [then Major] William R. Von Harten (MCSN: 0-67345), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Executive Officer, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, on 4 and 5 March 1967 in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During a heavy mortar attack, Lieutenant Colonel Von Harten unhesitatingly assumed command when the Commanding Officer was wounded and medically evacuated. That night the command post was attacked by a force estimated to be two enemy companies. He repeatedly moved from one position to another to direct the perimeter defense and control two other companies also under heavy enemy attack. Despite many casualties, Lieutenant Colonel Von Harten fearlessly led the Battalion and repulsed the enemy attack. The next day the Battalion moved out and again engaged a large enemy force, estimated to be an entire regiment. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he continually exposed himself to heavy enemy fire while directing his companies and inflicting severe losses on the enemy. Shortly before dark, he again successfully led the Battalion in stopping about 200 enemy soldiers from breaching the Battalion’s defense. By his inspiring leadership, courage, and bold initiative, Lieutenant Colonel Von Harten upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
