The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ray L. Vanzandt (MCSN: 2256470), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader of the Third Squad, First Platoon, Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 2 June 1967. During Operation UNION, in Quang Nam Province, Company D was on a line sweeping an open area with Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines on their left flank and the Second Platoon, Company D on their right flank. As the company was advancing on two Vietnamese villages tot heir direct and left fronts, the villages being approximately one hundred meters apart, it came under intense enemy semi-automatic, automatic weapons and deadly mortar fire. The initial burst of enemy fire caused ten casualties in the First Platoon. Corporal Vanzandt was wounded in the leg. Ignoring his painful wound and with complete disregard for his own safety, he courageously organized his squad to bring devastating fire upon the enemy positions, suppressing the enemy fire and protecting the company moving forward on his left flank. Mortally wounded during this action, Corporal Vanzandt, by his aggressive leadership and intrepid fighting spirit served to inspire all who observed him and contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of the company’s mission. His great personal valor reflected the highest credit upon himself and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
